The Desire for More

Hi friend,

I feel like it’s been so long since I actually typed out a devotional because I’ve been doing Live Facebook videos, but today changes that!

I know as fast paced and advancing the times are right now it desires us for more and better. We crave more variety of restaurants, stores, etc. We crave a phone with a better camera and a bigger television. Don’t get me wrong, all of those are nice in moderation, but what if all of those things are blocking you from receiving more of God? When you have worldly things that you put before spending time with God and doing things for him, that’s when they’re not okay.

I know we all have something in our lives that is preventing us from a deeper relationship with God, it’s important to have the discernment to know what that is. I think a lot of us are willfully ignorant to our sin or what we spend our time on when we know that that should be spent or given to God. We believe that God just ‘knows’ our hearts and our desires and everything is fine, which in a way that is true, but we also need to talk to him and share with him those things. He may be all knowing, but we need to put forth the work for him to really reveal himself to us.

We are stuck in this generation of “give me that” or “I deserve that” mindset, even in the church. Like everyone owes us something just because we showed up, instead of showing up with a servant heart. We dismiss scripture until it fits into our agenda and use God as a cushion when the going gets tough. Could you imagine doing that to your spouse, your family, your friends? Just taking and receiving rather than ever giving and helping? I think of that from God’s perspective and how hurt that must make him, because he just wants his children’s submission, time, and devotion.

The society we live it makes us think it’s okay to scroll social media and sit at coffee shops on our computers for hours, but show up with your bible and study the word and spending time with him? That’s just not normal. What kind of fruit has social media or your phone produced? Do either of those things really breath life into you, your family, your finances? I will answer that for you, no. Fruit is produced by spending time with God.

So while the world tells you, you need more of this or more of that to really feel fulfilled, open your bible and read real truth.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

“‘If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:1-4
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24

Reading through these scriptures I’ve pulled from the bible I hope you feel some type of conviction. Maybe that sounds mean that I want you to be convicted, but it’s not. Being convicted isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re hearing from God and it means. that you just have to take the next step to obedience to lay down what’s preventing you from growing.

Things of this earth stay here and do not care about you like God does.
